Marine Environment & Pollution Prevention Research Department

Marine Environment & Pollution Prevention Research Department is carrying out basic researches of exploring physical, chemical and geological oceanographic processes and developing a software-oriented pollution prevention system in coastal and marginal sea regions around the Korean peninsula. Main researches include the surveillance of environmental change in terms of deployment of mooring instruments, operation of various real-time monitoring arrays, numerical modeling of hydrodynamic and geo-chemical regimes along with the construction of the associated environmental management systems. Future researches will be focused on the multi-disciplinary cooperative researches to establish a more efficient pollution prevention system and to develop environmental restoration technologies.

Major Research Functions
Analysis of basic environmental characteristics and prediction of their changes in coastal and oceanic regions
Studies on the pollutant behavior and software-oriented technologies for pollution prevention
Development of an integrated management system of ocean disposal wastes
Investigations on the preservation, control and restoration of marine environments

Major Research Projects
Development of estuarine management and functional restoration technologies
Integrated preservation study on marine environments in the Saemangeum area
Study on improvement of marine environments in the Sihwa Lake
Research and management of wastes disposal at sea
Study on influence of Yellow Sands (Asian Dusts) on marine environments
